Y-V Plasty
Y-V Plasty Foreskin Reconstruction to Widen the Preputial Opening
What is Y-V Plasty?
Y-V Plasty is a reconstructive technique for widening a narrow preputial opening while preserving the foreskin. A Y-shaped incision is made on the foreskin, and the tissue is rearranged into a V-shape closure, effectively lengthening and widening the preputial opening using geometric skin plasty principles. It provides a more anatomically natural result than simple dorsal slit in patients who prefer foreskin preservation. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of Day Care. Success rates reach >85% in appropriately selected patients at experienced centres.
How the Procedure Works
Y Incision Design
Y-shaped incision designed with the stem of the Y on the dorsal preputial ring.
Full Thickness Incision
Y incision made through the full thickness of the preputial ring.
Flap Advancement
Skin flap advanced downward; V-closure performed converting the Y incision to a V.
Repair & Closure
Fine absorbable sutures used to close the V, widening the preputial opening.
Dressing & Healing
Dressing applied; healing typically complete within 2 weeks.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Preserves the foreskin for patients with cultural or personal preference.
- →More anatomically natural result than simple dorsal slit.
- →Day-case procedure performed under local or general anaesthesia.
- →Geometric plasty principle provides durable widening of preputial opening.
- →Avoids the social or cultural implications of complete circumcision.
- →Suitable for mild to moderate phimosis without lichen sclerosus.
"Y-V plasty is an elegant geometric solution for phimosis in patients who wish to preserve their foreskin. In the right case, it provides a durable, natural-looking widening of the preputial opening."
