What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is the complete surgical removal of the foreskin (prepuce) under general or local anaesthesia. It is the most effective and permanent treatment for phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin), paraphimosis (inability to return a retracted foreskin), recurrent balanitis, lichen sclerosus affecting the foreskin, and is also performed for religious, cultural, or cosmetic reasons. Circumcision provides definitive cure with excellent results. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of Day Care. Success rates reach >98% in appropriately selected patients at experienced centres.

Patients with phimosis, recurrent paraphimosis, recurrent balanitis, lichen sclerosus, posthitis, or those requesting circumcision for cultural, religious, or cosmetic reasons. Patients must be adequately fit for anaesthesia and free from active systemic infection before proceeding.

How the Procedure Works

1

Patient Positioning

Foreskin examined under general or local anaesthesia; degree of phimosis assessed.

Incision & Access

Foreskin retracted or incised to the corona; circumferential incision made proximal to the corona.

3

Tissue Resection

Foreskin removed preserving adequate skin on the shaft.

4

Haemostasis

Dartos fascia vessels coagulated; inner and outer skin edges apposed with absorbable sutures.

5

Post-Op Care

Dressing applied; patient discharged; post-operative hygiene instructions given.
