What is Microsurgical Varicocelectomy?

Microsurgical Varicocelectomy for male infertility uses an operating microscope through a small subinguinal incision to ligate all internal spermatic veins while preserving the testicular artery, lymphatics, and vas deferens. It addresses varicocele — the most common correctable cause of male infertility — with the lowest recurrence (<1%) and hydrocele (<1%) rates. Semen parameters improve in over 70% of men within 3–6 months of surgery. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of Day Care. Success rates reach >95% in appropriately selected patients at experienced centres.

Men with clinical varicocele (Grade 2–3), abnormal semen analysis, and primary or secondary infertility where all other fertility factors have been assessed. Patients must be adequately fit for anaesthesia and free from active systemic infection before proceeding.

How the Procedure Works

1

Incision & Access

Small subinguinal incision; spermatic cord delivered onto a tissue elevator.

2

Microscopic Identification

Operating microscope used to identify all internal spermatic veins under high magnification.

3

Vein Ligation with Structure Preservation

All veins ligated with clips or ties while testicular artery and lymphatics carefully preserved.

4

Contralateral Assessment

Contralateral side assessed and treated if varicocele is present bilaterally.

5

Wound Closure

Wound closed; scrotal support applied; discharged same day.
