Bladder Prolapse Treatment

Laparoscopic Sacrocolpopexy

Laparoscopic Mesh Repair to Correct Bladder and Vault Prolapse

What is Laparoscopic Sacrocolpopexy?

Laparoscopic Sacrocolpopexy attaches a Y-shaped mesh to the anterior and posterior vaginal walls and suspends it to the sacral promontory using laparoscopic instruments and small port incisions. It provides durable repair of bladder prolapse (anterior compartment), vault prolapse, and posterior compartment defects simultaneously. The laparoscopic approach offers equivalent durability to open sacrocolpopexy with reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of 2–3 Days. Success rates reach >85% in appropriately selected patients at experienced centres.

Women with symptomatic bladder prolapse (cystocele), vaginal vault prolapse, or multi-compartment pelvic organ prolapse requiring durable surgical correction. Patients must be adequately fit for anaesthesia and free from active systemic infection before proceeding.

How the Procedure Works

1

Port Placement

Four laparoscopic ports placed; peritoneum incised over the sacral promontory and vagina.

2

Vaginal Wall Dissection

Vaginal walls dissected anteriorly and posteriorly creating space for mesh placement.

3

Mesh Attachment to Vagina

Y-shaped polypropylene mesh sutured to the anterior and posterior vaginal walls.

4

Sacral Fixation

Mesh tail brought to the sacral promontory and secured with permanent sutures or tacks.

5

Peritoneal Closure

Peritoneum closed over the mesh; ports removed; vaginal apex suspended.
