Hydrocelectomy — Jaboulay's Procedure
Surgical Eversion of the Tunica Vaginalis to Treat Hydrocele Permanently
What is Hydrocelectomy — Jaboulay's Procedure?
Jaboulay's Hydrocelectomy is the most commonly performed surgical procedure for hydrocele. The tunica vaginalis is opened, the hydrocele fluid drained, and the tunica everted behind the testis and sutured in place to prevent fluid re-accumulation. This prevents the peritoneal-like tunica from secreting fluid into the sac, providing a permanent cure. It is simple, effective, and performed as a day-case procedure. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of Day Care. Success rates reach >95% in appropriately selected patients at experienced centres.
How the Procedure Works
Incision & Access
Scrotal incision exposes the hydrocele sac through the layers of the scrotum.
Sac Opening & Drainage
Tunica vaginalis sac opened; hydrocele fluid evacuated by suction.
Tunica Eversion
Tunica edges everted behind the testis and sutured in place with absorbable sutures.
Testis Return
Testis returned to the scrotum; haemostasis confirmed.
Wound Closure
Scrotal incision closed; scrotal support applied post-operatively.
