What is Epididymectomy?

Epididymectomy is the surgical removal of the epididymis, performed for chronic epididymitis causing persistent pain unresponsive to conservative treatment, recurrent epididymal abscess, epididymal masses, or epididymitis in a vasectomised patient causing post-vasectomy congestive epididymitis. The testis is preserved in most cases; the vas deferens is divided and the epididymis excised from the posterior surface of the testis. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of Day Care / 1 Day. Success rates reach >85% in appropriately selected patients at experienced centres.

Patients with chronic epididymitis causing persistent intractable pain, recurrent epididymal infection, epididymal masses, or post-vasectomy congestive epididymitis. Patients must be adequately fit for anaesthesia and free from active systemic infection before proceeding.

How the Procedure Works

1

Incision & Access

Scrotal incision; tunica vaginalis opened; testis and epididymis delivered.

2

Vas Division

Vas deferens identified and divided at the level of the globus minor.

3

Dissection & Mobilisation

Epididymis carefully dissected from the posterior surface of the testis.

4

Vessel Ligation

Blood vessels between epididymis and testis ligated and divided.

5

Wound Closure

Epididymis removed; testis returned to scrotum; wound closed in layers.

"Epididymectomy offers lasting relief for patients with chronic epididymal pain that has failed all other measures. Careful patient selection is key — in the right candidate, it can be transformative."
