Robotic Reimplantation

Robotic-Assisted Precise Ureteric Reimplantation for VUR

What is Robotic Reimplantation?

Robotic Reimplantation for VUR combines the precision of robotic surgery with the intravesical or extravesical reimplantation technique. Using the da Vinci robotic system, the surgeon performs the anti-reflux tunnel construction under 3D magnified vision with wristed instruments in the confined pelvic and intravesical space. Robotic assistance significantly improves the precision and ergonomics of minimally invasive reimplantation, achieving success rates approaching open surgery. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of 1–2 Days. Success rates reach >93% in appropriately selected patients at experienced centres.

Children and adults with VUR requiring minimally invasive reimplantation where robotic facilities are available and open surgery is not preferred. Patients must be adequately fit for anaesthesia and free from active systemic infection before proceeding.

How the Procedure Works

1

Port Placement & Docking

Robotic ports placed; da Vinci system docked.

2

Approach Selection

Intravesical or extravesical approach selected based on anatomy and VUR grade.

3

Ureteric Mobilisation

Ureteric orifice and detrusor muscle manipulated robotically under 3D magnification.

4

Anti-Reflux Tunnel Construction

Anti-reflux tunnel created with precision robotic suturing ensuring adequate tunnel length.

5

Stent & Closure

Ureteric stent placed; robot undocked; ports closed.

Who Needs This Treatment?

  • 3D robotic magnification improves suture placement in the confined pelvic and intravesical space.
  • Success rates approaching open reimplantation with minimally invasive approach.
  • Shortest hospital stay of all reimplantation approaches.
  • Reduced post-operative pain and haematuria compared to open surgery.
  • Wristed instruments allow suturing angles impossible with standard laparoscopy.
  • Suitable for complex anatomy where standard laparoscopy is technically demanding.
"

"Robotic reimplantation brings the accuracy of open surgery into a minimally invasive platform. The 3D vision and robotic dexterity translate into precise tunnel construction and excellent anti-reflux outcomes."
