What is Renal Transplantation?

Renal Transplantation is the definitive treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), providing a functioning kidney from a living or deceased donor. The donor kidney is placed heterotopically in the recipient's iliac fossa, with the renal artery and vein anastomosed to the iliac vessels and the ureter implanted into the bladder. A successful transplant eliminates the need for dialysis, restores near-normal kidney function, and dramatically improves life expectancy and quality of life. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia with a hospital stay of 7–14 Days.

Patients with end-stage renal disease from any cause who have been assessed and listed for transplantation, after appropriate pre-transplant workup and comorbidity optimisation. Patients must be adequately fit for anaesthesia and free from active systemic infection before proceeding.

How the Procedure Works

1

Back-Table Preparation

Donor kidney retrieved; back-table preparation with cold perfusion preservation.

2

Gibson Incision & Retroperitoneal Access

Gibson incision in the right iliac fossa; retroperitoneal space developed.

3

Vascular Anastomoses

Renal vein anastomosed end-to-side to external iliac vein; renal artery anastomosed to external iliac artery.

4

Reperfusion

Clamps released; kidney reperfuses and begins producing urine immediately in living donor cases.

5

Ureteroneocystostomy & Stent

Ureter implanted into the bladder dome (ureteroneocystostomy); DJ stent placed to protect the anastomosis.

Who Needs This Treatment?

  • Best treatment for ESRD — restores near-normal kidney function eliminating dialysis.
  • Eliminates dialysis dependency improving quality of life dramatically.
  • Living donor transplant provides best graft survival and immediate function.
  • Improved life expectancy compared to dialysis in matched age groups.
  • Freedom from fluid restrictions and dietary limitations of dialysis.

"

"Renal transplantation is the closest thing to a cure we can offer patients with kidney failure. The transformation from dialysis-dependent to independent living with a functioning kidney is one of medicine's most dramatic improvements in quality of life."
