Closed Reduction & Casting
A non-surgical fracture treatment in which the broken bone is manually realigned and immobilised with a cast or splint — allowing natural healing without the need for surgery.
What is Closed Reduction & Casting?
Closed Reduction and Casting is a non-surgical fracture treatment used when the broken bone can be restored to correct alignment without an operation. The surgeon carefully manipulates the fracture from outside the body, then immobilises the limb in a cast or splint to hold the bones in position while they heal naturally. This approach is used for stable fractures, simple displaced fractures, and many paediatric fractures. Regular follow-up X-rays throughout the healing period confirm maintained alignment and guide decisions about cast removal and the timing of rehabilitation.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia or Sedation
Local anaesthesia, sedation, or general anaesthesia is administered to ensure the patient is comfortable and muscle relaxation allows effective fracture manipulation.
Fracture Realignment
The surgeon carefully and precisely manipulates the injured limb externally to reduce the fracture and restore normal anatomical bone alignment.
Alignment Confirmation
Fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray) or standard X-ray confirms accurate reduction before immobilisation is applied.
Cast / Splint Application
A well-moulded plaster or fibreglass cast is applied to maintain fracture position, prevent movement, and protect the healing bone.
Neurovascular Check
Circulation, sensation, and movement in the fingers or toes are checked to confirm the cast is not causing undue pressureNeurovascular Check
Scheduled Follow-up X-rays
X-rays at regular intervals confirm the fracture remains correctly aligned throughout the healing period and guide the timing of cast removal
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →→ Non-surgical — no incisions, no anaesthetic risk of open surgery
- →→ Effective for stable and simple fractures in adults and children
- →→ Can often be performed on the same day as the injury
- →→ Regular imaging ensures correct bone healing throughout recovery
- →→ Physiotherapy after cast removal restores full strength and joint mobility
“Not every fracture needs surgery. For the right fracture pattern, closed reduction and casting delivers excellent outcomes — restoring alignment without an operation, with careful monitoring to ensure the bone heals correctly. Accurate initial assessment and consistent follow-up are the keys to success".
