What is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique using a small camera (arthroscope) inserted through tiny incisions to inspect, diagnose, and treat joint problems. It is used for the knee, shoulder, hip, and ankle. Compared to open surgery, arthroscopy offers smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery, and lower infection risk. Dr. Vipin Reddy performs a wide range of arthroscopic procedures including meniscal repair, ligament reconstruction, and shoulder stabilisation.

Most arthroscopic procedures are performed as day-care with discharge the same day — Dr. Vipin Reddy will confirm the admission requirement based on the planned procedure.

Key Information

Procedure Facts

Joints Treated

Knee (most common), shoulder, hip, and ankle — using 4mm arthroscope and precision instruments.

Common Procedures

Meniscus repair/trim, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, Bankart repair, loose body removal.

Anaesthesia

General or spinal anaesthesia; procedure duration 30–90 minutes depending on complexity.

Hospital Stay

Day-care or 1-night admission for most arthroscopic procedures.

Recovery

Return to sedentary work in 1–2 weeks; full recovery in 2–6 weeks depending on the procedure.

Insurance

Covered under most health insurance policies as a day-care procedure.

How the Procedure Works

1

Clinical Assessment & Imaging

MRI scan and clinical examination to confirm the diagnosis and plan the arthroscopic procedure.

2

Anaesthesia & Positioning

General or spinal anaesthesia administered; the joint is positioned and small portals (incisions) are created for the camera and instruments.

3

Arthroscopic Procedure

The arthroscope provides a clear view inside the joint — the surgeon repairs, reconstructs, or removes the damaged tissue using precision tools.

4

Recovery & Physiotherapy

Most patients are discharged the same day. Physiotherapy begins immediately to restore range of motion and strength.
