What is Arthroscopic Bankart Repair?

Arthroscopic Bankart Repair treats recurrent shoulder dislocations caused by a torn labrum — the ring of cartilage that stabilises the shoulder socket. When the labrum tears from the front of the glenoid (a Bankart lesion), the joint becomes loose and prone to repeated dislocation. The procedure reattaches the torn labrum to the glenoid edge using specialised anchors and sutures. Performed entirely through small keyhole incisions, it causes minimal tissue disruption and enables faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

SUITABLE FOR Patients with recurrent shoulder dislocations or persistent instability from a Bankart labral tear — particularly active individuals and athletes — where physiotherapy alone has not restored adequate joint stability.

How the Procedure Works

1

Pre-operative MRI / CT Assessment

MRI confirms the Bankart lesion and any associated bone loss or labral damage; CT quantifies glenoid bone deficiency to guide the surgical approach.

2

Anaesthesia & Arthroscopic Access

— Regional or general anaesthesia is administered; small keyhole incisions allow the arthroscope to provide high-resolution views of all shoulder structures.

3

Labral Tear Identification

The surgeon identifies the exact site and extent of the labral detachment, and assesses ligament, cartilage, and any Hill-Sachs bone involvement.

4

Glenoid Preparation

The glenoid edge where the labrum detached is gently debrided and micro-roughened to stimulate biological healing and secure anchor fixation.

5

Labrum Reattachment

— Specialised suture anchors are inserted into the glenoid; sutures are passed through the labrum and tightened to restore it to its anatomical position.

6

Inspection & Wound Closure

Stability of the repair and shoulder range of motion are confirmed; incisions are closed and the arm placed in a sling for the initial healing phase.
